Nature Tech Beyond Dashboards: Turning Monitoring Data into Conservation Action
Session Description
HCV Network opened by naming the core gap this session set out to explore: monitoring in the HCV Approach is typically expert-led, technical assessments and reports produced by outside specialists, while implementation depends on plantation managers, communities, and other local stakeholders who often have limited ownership over the process. Indicators like deforestation alerts or biodiversity observations get collected, but rarely get integrated with social indicators like community access rights, livelihoods, or local stewardship practices.
Belinda walked through the HCV Approach itself: a 20-plus-year-old, science-based framework used in over 60 countries, built into commodity sustainability standards like FSC and RSPO, and structured around six values spanning species, landscapes, ecosystems, ecosystem services, and two social categories (community livelihoods and cultural values). She illustrated the disconnect with examples from her own field experience, including camera traps changing women's behaviour in some communities, and a well built for a village that kept getting sabotaged because the real ask (privacy while collecting water) had never surfaced in formal consultations.
Attendees split into two themed roundtables. Theme A focused narrowly on how to affordably ground-truth and spot-check HCV Network's own Forest Integrity Assessment tool (a free, non-expert, photo-based proxy tool in use for the past decade). Theme B took the broader question of how to integrate community dependencies into biodiversity and social monitoring more generally. Each table fed back a single key idea in a short report-back round.

Tech built for monitoring nature often fails to account for how it lands with the people living alongside it. Camera traps were flagged as changing behaviour in some communities, particularly where being recorded carries cultural or religious sensitivity, a consequence rarely factored into deployment decisions.
Community mistrust of monitoring tech is frequently rooted in a history of extractive research relationships, information and benefit flowing out of a community rather than back into it, and free, prior, and informed consent (FPIC) can take years to establish for exactly this reason.

Multiple groups suggested pairing remote or satellite data with community-generated ground data (roof materials, water infrastructure, crop photos) as a low-cost proxy for tracking local prosperity or poverty over time.
A recurring theme: giving data back to communities, not just collecting it from them. One example raised was communities living beside camera-trap-monitored wildlife who never see the footage themselves, so never connect the data collection back to the animals they live alongside.
Groups noted offline-friendly, low-tech solutions (text-based reporting, in-person social hubs, community cooperatives) may work better than app-first designs in areas without reliable internet access.
